Workshop quick guide

A short route from a source and a question to your first published story, using the Compositor.

Drafts and publication

Your edits are saved as you work. Use Publish to send them to the repository and rebuild the public site.

  1. Start with a source and a question

Choose one source you can share. Write an opening question, a possible ending and two or three questions to connect them.

    Use the narrative planner →
  2. Open the Compositor and create your site

Open the Compositor and sign in with GitHub. Follow the setup instructions, choose Create a new Telar site and give it a name with lowercase letters and hyphens. If you already have a site, open or connect that one.

    Setup help →
  3. Add your source to Objects

In Objects, choose + Add object. Upload an image with Upload file, or use IIIF manifest and Fetch manifest for an external collection. Review the title, source and credit.

Try the khipu IIIF example →
  4. Create a short story

Open Stories and choose + New Story. Give it a title, then use + Add step and Change object to select your source. Write a question and a brief answer. Repeat for your next questions.

    Read the story walkthrough →
  5. Frame the detail and offer context

On each image step, pan and zoom to the detail you want to discuss, then choose Capture position. Use + Add panel when a step needs a longer explanation. Keep the main answer short.

    See the framing controls →
  6. Publish, then visit the result

Open Publish, review your changes and resolve any blocking errors. Publish and wait for the build to finish. Visit the public story and check its images, framing, text and credits. If the story is marked Draft, it will not appear in the public exhibition.
